BTEC Level 2 Public Services

This qualification is aimed at those who have yet to achieve enough level 2 qualifications to pursue a Level 3 programme. This course forms part of our Level 2 offer.

This course includes practical work-related activities for people considering a career in the Public Services. You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.

Entry requirements

The entry requirements for this course are 5 GCSEs at grades 1-3 (or BTEC equivalents).

Course Content

This is a one year programme and is the equivalent to one GCSE.


Units studied
  • The role of work in the Public Services –  Externally set examination in January

  • You will learn about how the Public Services of the UK are organised and funded and how they are accountable for how they spend the money they are allocated. 

  • Working skills in the Public Service Sector— This unit is assessed by with coursework and is internally assessed.

  • You will learn the skills that are necessary to meet the needs of customers of public services and get the opportunity to develop your own skills through different situations that might occur in the public sector.

  • Health, fitness & Lifestyle in the Public Services. - In this internally assessed unit students will explore the diets, nutrition and lifestyle in order to maintain a healthy regime. You will take part in or run fitness tests for students to identify how close they are to achieving the fitness required for particular public service careers.

  • Employment in the Public Services—This internally assessed unit will investigate the day to day requirements of different public service careers. Students will take part in a selection process for a public service career where they will have the opportunity to develop their own job application skills.


This course is 75% internally assessed coursework and 25% examination.  Assessments include written assignments, presentations and display work. A number of practical activities will be assessed and observed by tutors.

Future Prospects

The BTEC Level 2 Public Services qualification can lead to employment in the public services sector or opportunities to move on to Level 3 courses.
