BTEC Level 3 Public Services

This course is aimed at students who would like to gain employment in the public services sector or to those who want to learn more about how the Public Service sector is organised. The course will give students the skills they need to understand the  public services sector through studying a variety of units over a two year period. The course will provide a real insight into the work carried out by our public services and will give you the knowledge, skills and understanding you will need for direct employment into a range of public services or for progression on to a university course.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for this course are 5 GCSEs at grades 4-9 (or BTEC equivalents).

Course Content

Each year we review the units to suit our students and their own personal development. Below are examples of the possible content.

  • Government, Policies and the Public Services

  • Team Leadership in the Uniformed Public Services

  • Citizenship, Contemporary Society and the Public Services

  • Outdoor and Adventurous Expeditions

  • Crime and its Effects on Society

  • Responding to Emergency Service Incidents

  • Team Development in Public Services

  • Understanding Discipline within the Uniformed Public Services

  • Physical Preparation and Fitness for the Uniformed Services

  • The Planning for and Management of Major Incidents


Assessment is continuous and you will complete a variety of assignments, some of which are practical and some project based. Evidence for assessment can include portfolio work, research/written assignments, video/observations, presentations all graded at Pass, Merit and Distinction. All units are assessed individually and the final grade is an aggregate of the unit grades achieved in all the units covered.

Future Prospects

On successful completion of a BTEC in Public Services, students can progress into employment in the Public Service Sector or continue their studies at higher education establishments, leading to specialist courses in Public Services.
