College Courses Available

Level 3 Programme

As a result of a new national policy significant changes to qualifications at this level have been made over the last two years. The structure of the A levels within our curriculum have changed so that all of the assessments are taken at the end of the second year (these are known as linear A Levels). Students will be expected to sit and pass a formal end of year 12 examination in each subject to ensure their progression into year 13; this is also an excellent measure to support UCAS applications.

These work-related qualifications are suitable for a wide range of abilities. They provide a practical, real-world approach to learning without sacrificing any of the essential subject theory. BTECs give students the skills they need either to move on to higher education, or into employment. They are valued by colleges, universities, employers and professional bodies across the United Kingdom.

New BTECs commencing in September 2018 will be assessed through a combination of internally assessed units and external examinations.

Level 2 Programme

At Birchwood College we have created a curriculum to meet the different needs of our post-16 students. If you have not yet achieved 5 GCSE grades 4-9, or equivalent in your Year 11 courses, here is your opportunity to undertake exciting new applied courses whilst also improving your grades in GCSE Maths and English.

All courses offered at this level last for one year and they lead on to our Level 3 programme, giving you the opportunity to study at Birchwood College for one, two or three years.

Birchwood College Internship Programme

An exciting opportunity within our curriculum is our Internship Programme, which incorporates a programme that combines Level 2 or Level 3 study with some regular work experience.  This is an attempt to further prepare students for the challenges ahead when they leave full time education.  It is thought that this programme will either serve to up-skill students in preparation for full time employment, or give them valuable work experience that will bolster their university application.  Further information about the programme can be found here.
