BTEC Level 3 Business

The Pearson BTEC Extended Certificate is equivalent to 1 A Level and lasts for a 2 year programme of study.

The course is designed for students who want to know and understand how businesses operate. The delivery of the course is based around business and group activities which we run with help from local business partners. The course is delivered through four units of study and runs for two years.

Entry requirements

The entry requirements for this course are 5 GCSEs at grades 4-9 (or BTEC equivalents).

Course Content

During the two year course students will study three compulsory units:

  • Exploring Business

  • Developing a Marketing Campaign

  • Personal and Business Finance

They will also study one optional unit from the following list:

  • Recruitment and Selection Process

  • Investigating Customer Service

  • Market Research

  • The English Legal System

  • Work Experience in Business

Assessment

Assessment is a combination of internal and external assessments. In year 1 there will be one internally assessed coursework unit and one externally assessed timed controlled assessment. In year 2 there is one internally assessed coursework unit and one examination. This is similar to BTEC Level 2 courses that you may have studied in school.

Evidence for assessment includes portfolio work, research/written assignments, business presentations and video/observations of practical sessions. These are all graded at Pass, Merit and Distinction. All units are assessed individually and the final grade is an aggregate of the unit grades achieved in all of the units covered.

Approach to Teaching and Learning
  • Group work

  • Class discussion

  • Study packs

  • Individual reviews with your teacher

  • Business websites and on-line resources

  • Taking the lead in group tasks

  • Individual research

  • Projects based on local business problems

Future Prospects

This BTEC Business course links well with other subjects at Level 3 and provides a pathway into a variety of higher education and degree courses. If a job is your next step, you will have acquired the skills and understanding of the operation and running of different types of businesses whilst working with local business organisations.
